The Provost’s annual Christmas Appeal has kicked off for this year and is looking for donations to ensure that children and young people get a cracking Christmas.

In previous years, hundreds of employees handed in gifts to Council collection points but with COVID-19 restrictions in place, that won’t be possible in 2020.

This year, a Just Giving page has been created so employees, their families and elected members can make a financial donation to a fund that will then be used to buy presents, food and other gifts for all ages from local shops.

Staff in social work and third sector organisations will be able to reach those who are in most need of support.

Cara’s story as told by her mum (names have been changed)

“My wee girl is in primary school and is still young enough to believe that Santa brings toys to everybody so how can I tell her that she may not get anything she adds to her list?   I am trying to prepare her for having less this Christmas because of COVID-19 saying Santa and the elves can’t do as much as before.  I will try to get her a few wee bits and pieces for Christmas morning, but I worry that she when goes back to school she will hear how the other children got what they wanted from Santa.

I am sad that I have to rely on other people to help with my children’s Christmas, but if this is what it means to keep the magic of Christmas alive for her, then I will be so grateful for that help and I do appreciate the kindness of those people.  In years to come I will look forward to helping other families who are in my position.”

Provost William Buchanan explained why the appeal was so important especially this year. He said:

“Many local families have been badly affected by the impact of COVID-19 and the economic uncertainty it has brought to thousands of people. This appeal will bring a lot of joy to many on Christmas day where parents and carers will be really struggling to give their children a good time. Please give what you can – no donation is too big or too small. It will reach the families who really need it most.”

Help local children get the Christmas they deserve by donating to the Just Giving page now.
