A kind-hearted refuse collector has completed the West Highland Way in aid of charity.

David Kowal took on the arduous 96-mile challenge in aid of Scottish Autism in May 2021, his fifth completion of the route.

Stretching from Milngavie to Fort William, the West Highland Way takes in some of Scotland’s finest scenery, including the ominously named ‘Devil’s Staircase’.

Blisters

Two of David’s colleagues attempted the hike alongside him, but had to withdraw part way through due to blisters – a common occurrence on the popular long distance trail.

The trio had originally planned to attempt the walk in summer 2020, with the coronavirus pandemic getting in the way.

What started out as a hobby evolved into the fundraising challenge, and the three lads loved every minute of their hike – blisters and all.

“We socialise, climb hills and go fishing together so we were really just looking for some release after two lockdowns. It was nice to get out with mates and enjoy the awesome scenery.

“We were lucky to be binmen in a sense as we weren't locked up for weeks on end during the pandemic, but I think the majority of us still need a holiday as we've never stopped.”

Experienced walker David has now completed the West Highland Way five times, and led Gary and Jose on their maiden trip.

Charity

Having previously raised money for cancer charities and children’s hospices, David said his focus this time round is to raise money for people living with autism.

“The choice of charity was easy enough. Some of my friends have children living with autism, so I thought we could do our bit.

“One friend in particular struggles as a single mum, and there isn't a good enough support structure in place for people like her and her son.

“After all, we're doing the walk anyway so why not?”
