Douglas Gardiner (pictured above) has been appointed as Falkirk Council's Head of Environment and Operations.

Douglas Gardiner was appointed last month to the post of Head of Environment and Operations and will lead on a range of service areas which include waste, fleet, resilience and estates.

Douglas brings a wealth of experience to the post having spent the last twenty years of his professional life working in the public sector before joining Falkirk Council as Waste Manager in 2018.

His public sector career started in 2003 when he joined East Ayrshire Council as a Recycling Officer. From then on Douglas gained significant experience within the waste, resource management and sustainability fields, all within a local government context.

During this time environmental targets evolved significantly and he has been directly involved in developing and delivering strategies and policies designed to enhance the environment including waste management, biodiversity and sustainability. He has also led on large scale service redesign and engineering projects in waste and recyclate collections, landfill restoration and the complete redesign of Council depots through to implementation.

Douglas said: “During my career I have been fortunate enough to have been heavily involved in so many changes in the waste and sustainability fields, when both were in their relevant infancy, working towards the ambitions of a circular economy and developing carbon budgets.

“Throughout my career I have gained invaluable knowledge and experience from both a strategic and operational perspective and have continually delivered progressive change to the services I have worked in.  I am most looking forward to working with our dedicated and multi-skilled teams across the Environment and Operations Service, and one of the first things I’d like to do is to get out and about the area and meet as many as I can.”
