Climate Week 2019 saw a week of action against the threat of climate change in Scotland, and globally.

The public and employees took part in a series of events over seven days that saw them get involved in a wide range of activities. These included:

  • Travelling sustainably – where a free breakfast voucher was offered to those who commuted sustainably (including our Chief Executive Kenneth Lawrie)
  • Sustainable lunches bought from local shops
  • Food Growing workshops delivered by Sustainable Thinking Scotland in Kinneil Walled Garden
  • Energy efficiency with employees switching off electrical items in offices
  • Visits to Dalderse water treatment plant and Roughmute recycling centre
  • Inspiring Movie Nights at Falkirk Active Travel Hub & the Hippodrome
  • Biodiversity events – Autumn Walk & conservation actions

As part of the Week's learning, here’s some ideas that allows you to play your part.

Everyone can make a difference

It’s true, everyone has a part to play in the fight against climate change. Small changes can make a big difference. By making a small change to your lifestyle you can be part of a global green movement.

There are dedicated eco-friendly shops in the Falkirk area

There’s a growing number of sustainable shops and service providers in the Falkirk area, and you can use our Sustainable Falkirk map to find them. From repair shops to vegan food delivery services, there are loads of green options around the area.

Going veggie – even part-time – can help

Even the most voracious meat-eaters can help by switching out meat a couple of times a week. Replace meat with veggie alternatives and you’ll be helping to fight climate change from the dinner plate. Switch out beef for beans for a decent veggie chilli.

You can save money by going green

A few extra quid can go a long way. Cycling or walking saves on petrol or transport costs, whilst you can save a few bob with vegetarian meals. Reusing items like water bottles – say, at a public Top Up Tap courtesy of Scottish Water – saves you buying a new one every trip.

You can get fit by going green

Using greener ways of getting about can be a great way to help the environment and get fit at the same time. Cycling burns up to 750 calories an hour, and is great for your overall health and muscular endurance. Make it a habit by building it into your commute.

If you want to get more involved in helping to promote resource efficiency across the Council a new Green Champions Network has been set up that supports the Energy & Climate change team. Get in touch with them at climatechange@falkirk.gov.uk.
