Coronavirus (COVID-19) information

COVID-19 guidance on car sharing can be found on Liftshare's website.

Advice for employers on social distancing during coronavirus (COVID-19) from Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy:

Use of private vehicles and car pooling

When using a private vehicle to make a journey that is essential, cars should only be shared by members of the same household. Those who normally share a car with people who are not members of their own household for a journey that is essential, e.g. getting to work, should consider alternatives such as walking, cycling and public transport where you maintain a distance of 2 metres from others.

If the journey is essential, such as travel to work, and there is no option but to share a car with people who are not part of the same household, journeys should be shared with the same individuals and with the minimum number of people at any one time.

Good ventilation (i.e. keeping the windows open) and facing away from each other may help to reduce the risk of transmission. Private vehicles that are used by people from multiple households should be cleaned regularly using gloves and standard cleaning products with particular emphasis on handles and other areas where passengers may touch surfaces.

With the cost of driving rising each year, you can reduce the amount you spend by car sharing. Not only can car sharing save you money, it helps to cut congestion and the associated environmental impact, and reduces the stress of driving.

Cut congestion

Car sharing directly reduces the number of single occupancy vehicles on the road every day. This means there are fewer cars on the road, with less queues of traffic meaning quicker journeys. Fewer cars also mean more parking spaces, cutting down the time it takes to find a space.

By sharing a car journey, you are also reducing the environmental impacts of driving. Two people sharing a car cuts the CO2 emissions in half – and the more you share, the more you save!

Save money

Save money by sharing your travel costs. The financial savings made by halving (or more) the cost of a commute is one of the biggest incentives to car share. 50% of members who answered said saving money was very important when deciding to car share.

Reduce stress

Car sharing has benefits on your metal wellness, including the reduction of stress sitting in traffic alone and having someone to speak with about the day on the journey home.

As well as having a chat on an otherwise lonely journey to work, car sharers have also expressed that they have been able to vent their issues to someone less emotionally involved, arriving at home a happier individual. 44% of members said that car sharing made their journey less stressful, and 52% said it made their journey more fun.

TripshareFalkirk

TripshareFalkirk is a free car sharing scheme that matches people who make similar journeys whether they are commuting, on the school run, taking a leisure trip or a one-off journey. It can be used for local journeys, as well as journeys across Scotland and the rest of the UK. It can also be used for taxi, cycling and walking journeys.

All you have to do is register your details and add your journey to find drivers and passengers to share with. When you have found a suitable match from the results, you can contact other members using the internal messaging system.

You don't even need a car to car share. Many people are happy to offer lifts in exchange for sharing the fuel costs. You can register as a 'passenger only’ if you don’t have a car.
