A new policy is set to provide Falkirk Council staff with paid volunteering leave to help good causes in the local area.

The Employee Volunteering Policy allows staff to spend up to one day (pro rata for part time) each year supporting charities, non-profit organisations and other Council services in the Falkirk area, such as:

  • Care homes
  • Day centres
  • Schools
  • Samaritans of Falkirk and Central Scotland
  • The Falkirk Foodbank
  • Mentoring or befriending activities

The new scheme encourages employees to help local community causes in need, using their skills and time, whilst strengthening relations between Falkirk Council and the communities it serves.

The policy was approved at the Executive Committee meeting on 15 January 2019, and follows similar policies at West Lothian and North Ayrshire Councils. The Employee Volunteering Policy is open to all employees with contracts over 12 months in duration, and who have a 96% (or greater) attendance record.

Activities should not be in conflict with any duties as an employee of Falkirk Council. Managers can assist with this consideration.

How do I request volunteering leave?

If you want to take part in volunteering, speak to your line manager about your request.

If you have access to MyView, you can submit your request under 'Request New Paid Special Leave', then selecting 'FC Community Volunteering'. You must include the name of the charity/organisation where you will volunteer, in the comments box.

If you don't have access to MyView, you'll need to complete the Application for Employee Volunteering Form and discuss it with your line manager.

Community Planning Partnership

As part of the Council's locality planning responsibilities, the Community Planning Partnership works with local communities to tackle local inequalities and issues. This brings together local people, Elected Members and community planning partners. The Employee Volunteering Policy was developed to bring together Falkirk Council staff and good causes in Falkirk's communities.
