Grangemouth Town Centre Masterplan
Grangemouth town centre is a district town centre in the Council’s network of centres and is the second largest town centre in the area after Falkirk. The town centre comprises a 1970s precinct which was refurbished in the 1990s; the traditional civic buildings along Bo’ness Road; and an Asda store to the north behind the town hall which was built in 2006.
Like other town centres, it is struggling to adapt to economic and social changes and trends in retailing. Vacancy levels are high. The environment of the precinct is poor, although there is a wealth of built heritage along Bo’ness Road which provides historic character and identity, reflecting the town’s more prosperous past. The town centre has an out-dated design, with a reliance on private vehicle access, and a significant supply of car parking. While Council and other social housing is deemed to be generally well maintained and of a good standard, there is a lack of front and back door housing, and there is opportunity to review the town’s housing stock as it reaches the end of its constructive life.
Given the challenges which need to be addressed and the opportunities to be maximised, in Grangemouth, the Council has commissioned a Spatial Vision and Town Centre Masterplan, to identify the physical and environmental interventions, alongside socio-economic factors, which can contribute towards the regeneration of the town.
