Buying a lair (grave)

From 1 March 2026, in accordance with the Burial and Cremation (Scotland) Act, the right of burial will reduce from 100 years to 25 years, with the option to extend in further 10‑year increments. Lairs purchased before that date remain unaffected and will continue under the original 100‑year term.

We appreciate that during this difficult time you will have to make important decisions about the cemetery and lair you want for the funeral.

Normally a funeral director (Undertaker) would help make the arrangements for buying a lair, although some people may want to make their own arrangements.

Both full and half lairs (half lairs are for cremation caskets only) can be purchased when they are needed for coffin and cremated remains interments.

More cost information can be found on our funeral cost information page.

All purchased lairs are owned for a period of 100 years.
