Conservation areas

There are 9 conservation areas in the Falkirk Council area. Each of these contributes to the character and identity of the area and receives special protection.

The Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997 states that conservation areas "are areas of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance".

We have produced conservation area management plans for each area to advise property owners, occupiers and agents on their responsibilities when developing, or making alterations to land and premises in the conservation area. In particular:

  1. the policies and procedures to be followed, and
  2. the design standards expected.

Trees

Trees in Conservation Areas are also protected. If you propose to carry out work to trees in a Conservation Area, you must give the council 6 weeks notice of your intended work.

An application form for work on protected trees should be completed.
