Rent Deposit Assistance Scheme
If you're looking for a private rented home in the Falkirk area but can’t afford the deposit, the Rent Deposit Assistance Scheme may be able to help.
This page explains who can apply, how the scheme works, and what to do next.
Who can apply?
You may be eligible if you:
- Are 16 or over
- Are homeless or at risk of homelessness
- Are on a low income and cannot afford a deposit
- Live in the Falkirk Council area or have a local connection
If you're unsure whether you qualify, you can still apply and we will assess your circumstances.
How the Scheme Works?
If your application is approved:
- Falkirk Council will pay the deposit directly to your landlord
- Your deposit will be lodged in an approved tenancy deposit scheme, just like any other private tenancy
- You will repay the deposit to Falkirk Council over a maximum of 12 months
How to Apply
You can apply online:
Before applying, make sure you:
- Have details of the property you want to rent
- Have information about your household and income
- Allow enough time for processing before you are due to sign a tenancy agreement
How Much You Can Receive
The deposit amount we can award depends on:
- Your household size and circumstances
- The Local Housing Allowance rate for the Forth Valley area
We will calculate the eligible deposit amount during the assessment.
When Will My Landlord Be Paid?
If you receive an award, the payment may take up to 7 days to reach your landlord.
Please keep this in mind when planning your move-in date and tenancy signing.
Important Information
Your application may be affected if you have previously not paid housing-related costs, such as:
- Rent
- Service charges
- Rechargeable repairs
We will discuss any concerns with you as part of the application process.
