Education inspectors have praised the work of pupils and staff at Westquarter Primary school and nursery this week (9 December) after a report from Education Scotland highlighted strong leadership, a clear sense of community, and effective support for children across the school and nursery.

Inspectors noted the positive, nurturing ethos across the school, where children are “happy, well-behaved and respectful” and show a strong understanding of diversity in their daily interactions.

The report also highlights the headteacher’s leadership, describing it as “strong and effective” and central to driving improvement.

Staff were recognised for their commitment to professional learning and for introducing approaches that help children stay motivated and make good progress.

In the nursery, relationships with families were described as “very positive,” with children settled, happy and confident in their play.

Education Scotland rated the school’s performance as follows:

  • Leadership of change - Very good
  • Learning, teaching and assessment - Good
  • Ensuring wellbeing, equality and inclusion - Very good
  • Raising attainment and achievement - Good.

Inspectors also identified areas for improvement, including continuing to strengthen the consistency of teaching and learning, and raising attainment further in writing, numeracy and mathematics.

Nursery staff were also encouraged to keep developing play spaces to ensure all children are appropriately challenged.

Mrs Elaine Ramsay, Headteacher at Westquarter Primary School, said:

The report reflects the fact that staff in school and nursery care deeply about our children and recognises the hard work and commitment from them in providing strong outcomes for all.

“It also reflects the kindness, resilience and enthusiasm of our children, along with the strong partnerships we have with families.

“Our whole school community should feel proud of what we have achieved together and we look forward to continuing our journey of improvement and success.

Councillor Iain Sinclair, Falkirk Council’s spokesperson for Education, said:

This is a positive inspection for Westquarter Primary School and Nursery. The findings show we have a committed team delivering strong leadership, inclusive practice, and a positive learning environment for children.

“The areas identified for improvement are clear and achievable, and the Council will continue to support the school as it builds on this progress. We would like to thank staff, pupils and families for their continued effort and dedication.

No further inspection visits are planned by Education Scotland following the original inspection that took place in September 2025.
