These FAQs explain what to expect while staying in temporary accommodation. They are written in clear, accessible language to support people who may be feeling stressed, unsure or overwhelmed.

Can I choose the area my temporary accommodation is in?
Our temporary accommodation is limited. We will always try to meet your needs, but we may not be able to offer you a property in your preferred area. We will discuss options with you.
Can I bring my pets?
You may be able to keep pets in fully furnished temporary properties, but you must get permission from us first.
Pets cannot stay in:
- supported accommodation
- shared accommodation
- B&B or hotel placements
If you cannot find somewhere safe for your pet, we can give you information about pet fostering services.
Can you store my furniture or belongings?
Yes. We can help you arrange storage for essential belongings if you are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
Please note:
- Storage space is limited, so we cannot take everything.
- We will uplift and store your essential items when you move into temporary accommodation.
Your Homeless Assessment Officer will explain what can be stored.
How long will I be in temporary accommodation?
This varies depending on how quickly suitable housing becomes available.
Many people stay between 12 and 18 months, but it can be shorter or longer.
You can help speed things up by:
- bidding regularly on Homespot
- considering all suitable housing options
We will keep in touch throughout your stay.
What if the temporary accommodation is far from my child’s school or nursery?
We will discuss your children's needs with you.
We may be able to offer:
- transport for primary aged children
For older children:
- secondary school pupils will normally be expected to use public transport via the Young Persons’ Free Bus Travel Scheme.
We cannot offer transport to nurseries.
What happens if I damage my temporary accommodation?
If you deliberately damage the property, furniture or fittings, you will be charged for the repair or replacement.
If something breaks accidentally, please report it straight away so we can help.
How do I report a repair?
Please report repairs as soon as possible to keep your home safe.
I’m concerned about anti‑social behaviour. What should I do?
You can report concerns to the Conflict Resolution Service.
If the behaviour breaches the rules of supported accommodation, you may be asked to leave that service.
