Recruitment guidance for applicants

Application stage

Thank you for showing an interest in working with Falkirk Council. This guide has been created to support you with your application to work with us. We want to get to know you and what you can bring to Falkirk Council. Please take the time to think about the skills, knowledge and experience you have and how this meets the requirements of the role you are interested in.

Recruitment paperwork

Each post will have information relating to the responsibilities of the job as well as the skills, knowledge and experience that are essential (must haves) and desirable (good to haves). Please ensure you read through these documents carefully and think about how you meet the criteria for the post.

Application form

The application form on myjobscotland is your first chance to tell us about you and your suitability for the role you're applying for.

Please make every effort to fully complete each section of the application form showing how your skills, experience, knowledge and qualification meet the essential and desirable criteria for the role. You should provide a relevant practical example to demonstrate how you meet each criteria.

If you are applying for different roles within the Council each application you make should be tailored to demonstrating the skills, knowledge, qualifications and training you possess which meet the essential and desirable criteria for the role.

There is an option to "Import data from my CV" if you want to use this to pre-complete the information in the application form. If you use this option please ensure that you check the details carefully to make sure all relevant information has transferred over and is accurate.

Please note that there is a "Save Progress" button which allows you to save your application. You can return to it at any point by going through the "My Account" menu and selecting "My Applications. Please ensure that you are aware of the closing date for applications and that you submit your application in advance of the deadline.

Personal information

This is where you add the essential information about yourself such as name and contact details, most recent job and employer. All communication through myjobscotland is by email, so please ensure you include a current email address that only you have access to.

Please ensure you check this section carefully so that we don't have any issues making contact with you. Please note that you do not need to provide your first name, just your initial.

Application form

In this section you should record details of further education and qualifications related to the role you are applying for, in order from the most recent to the oldest. Please insert "Qualification Type" and "Subject and Result" for each qualification.

Use the "Add" button to add a new entry for each qualification.

If you are applying for an entry level role or you have not got further education qualifications, secondary school qualifications should be included.

Please note that you may be asked to bring qualification certificates to interview with you so please ensure that you have these available.

Work history

This section is for you to list your current employment and at least 3 years previous employment in date order. You are asked to include the Organisation name, your Job Title, Department, employment dates and a brief description of responsibilities, experience and knowledge gained.

This is a free text box and is your chance to note down your experience based on your previous jobs and what duties you had to do. It is important to look at the job description to make sure you write down how you meet the criteria for this role through your previous experience. These sections are an opportunity for you to sell yourself, as this is the first point of contact with your potential new employer and is where you state why you are the best person for the job.

Be specific, for example if you say that you have "good organisational skills" explain why this is/how you have used these skills in the role you are referring to.

For the post that is your current role you will also be asked to provide a brief detail of the reason for leaving and your notice period (in weeks).

Please also provide details of any memberships you have that are relevant to the role you are applying for eg SSSC using the "Add" button to enter different membership. Leave this section blank if this is not relevant.

There is also a section to add details of any courses you have completed that are relevant to the role you are applying for eg First Aid Training. For each entry please provide the Course Name, Result, Date and use the "Add" button to enter details of additional courses.

References

Make sure your referees are willing to provide a reference before adding their names to your application – they will only be contacted if you reach the preferred candidate stage as part of the pre-employment checks.

Your reference is usually your most recent employer/line manager. If you don't have a recent employer that can provide a reference, you could include the name of someone who knows you well and could speak to your ability to undertake the requirements of the role. For example, a teacher or a leader of a club or group you attend. Please check all details carefully to ensure that there is no delay in us being able to contact your referees.
