Mobile Emergency Care Service (MECS)
MECS is a 24/7 community alarm service, helping people live as independently as possible within their own homes, by installing telecare equipment and offering 24 hour monitoring and support.
How MECS works
We will install an alarm unit in your home. The alarm unit uses mobile technology so you do not need a telephone line.
When you activate the alarm you are connected to our central control room which operates 24 hours a day. You can make an alarm call by using your pendant or by pressing the alarm unit itself. The alarm can also be triggered by additional telecare devices, such as door sensors, smoke detectors and epilepsy monitors.
This means you can call for emergency help when you need it - for example, if you have fallen.
How we can help you in an emergency
The help you get will depend on what your emergency is.
We may:
- Contact your GP or next of kin
- Contact the emergency service
- Send a warden to your home
How to get a MECS system installed in your home
You can apply to join the MECS service by completing our online application form below or by contacting your local Social Work Team.
We will use the information you give us to prioritise your need. We want to make sure that we help people who are most vulnerable and in the greatest need.
In most cases you must have a keysafe fitted before completing the application. Information about keysafes can be found below.
We are registered with the Care Inspectorate. You can view our inspection reports on their website.

Feedback
An easy way to provide feedback is through Care Opinion, an independent website which is trusted by Scottish Government and NHS Scotland. Feedback and reviews published on Care Opinion are read and responded to by members of local teams – meaning your comments can reach staff directly.
How to complain about the MECS service
We have a complaints procedure for you to follow. You can talk to us about your complaint or put it in writing. You also have the right to complain to the Care Inspectorate at any time.
