Falkirk Junior Bike Club
Falkirk Junior Bike Club (FJBC) has been working since 2016 to inspire young people in the local community to take up cycling.
Partnering with the Zetland Park Regeneration Project, the club developed a thriving Pump Track Racing Series thanks in large part to the support they've received through Falkirk Council’s Community Choices Small Grants Programme in 2024.
The funding has enabled FJBC to purchase vital equipment, including bikes, helmets, protective gear, and event accessories.
This has allowed young people aged 8-16 the chance to engage in competitive cycling and grow their skills in a supportive environment and ensures that no young person is left out due to a lack of resources, removing barriers to participation and allowing everyone to compete on an equal footing.
In addition to providing the equipment, the club has focused on developing young community leaders who can help organise and run events, building local capacity and nurturing a new generation of sport leaders.
Fraser Johnston, Head Coach at FJBC, highlighted the impact of the funding::
"The support from Falkirk Council has been instrumental in helping us achieve our goals. "With the grant, we’ve been able to provide the necessary equipment to ensure everyone, regardless of their background, can participate in our events. It’s not just about cycling; it’s about giving young people the confidence and skills to thrive, while also fostering a strong sense of community. “With the Community Choices Small Grant, FJBC has been able to continue offering free coaching sessions during school holidays and will continue to expand our events in the future."
The club’s events have now been shortlisted for 'Event of the Year’ at the upcoming Scottish Cycling Awards in November 2024.
