Moving to a smaller home
If your Falkirk Council home is now too big for your needs, you may be able to receive a grant of £2,000 or more plus practical help to move to a smaller property. This page explains who can apply, how the scheme works, and what to do next.
Who can apply
You may qualify if you:
- are a Scottish Secure Tenant with Falkirk Council
- currently live in a 3‑bedroom property or larger
- have 2 or more bedrooms you no longer need
- want to move to a smaller Falkirk Council property
If you're unsure whether you qualify, contact us and we’ll advise you.
What the scheme offers
If you qualify, we will provide:
- a grant payment based on how many bedrooms you give up
- advice and practical support to help you move
Grant amounts
| Current accommodation | Moving to | Grant payable |
|---|---|---|
| 3 bedrooms | 1 bedroom | £2,000 |
| 4 bedrooms | 2 bedrooms | £2,000 |
| 1 bedroom | £3,000 | |
| 5 bedrooms | 2 bedrooms | £3,000 |
| 1 bedroom | £4,000 |
The grant is higher when you move from a much larger home to a much smaller one.
To take part, you must be registered for housing on Homespot and bidding for available properties.
If you need help registering, we can support you.
What happens if you receive an offer
If you accept an offer of a smaller property, we will:
- help you complete any forms
- help you sign your new tenancy agreement
- refer you for additional support if you need help moving
When you accept your new home, you must:
- confirm you are giving up your current tenancy
- return your keys to the local office
- ensure all household members, relatives, lodgers and friends also move out (they cannot take over your tenancy)
We will explain all steps clearly before you sign for your new home.
If you change your mind
This scheme is completely voluntary. You do not need to move unless you want to.
If you change your mind at any stage, please contact us. It's also important to tell us if your circumstances change.
Can my request be refused?
We may refuse your request if:
- the move would leave your household overcrowded,
- or your request does not meet the Housing Allocations Policy
Funding is limited, and places are allocated on a first‑come, first‑served basis.
What if I have rent arrears or owe money?
If you owe money for:
- rent
- Council Tax
- rechargeable repairs
…your grant will be used to reduce or clear what you owe. Any remaining balance will be paid to you. We will also complete an inspection of your current home before you move.
Need help or have questions?
You can contact us at any stage to discuss whether the scheme is right for you.
