Types of Marriage
There are two ways you can marry in Scotland – by a religious or belief ceremony or by a civil ceremony.
- A civil marriage can take place in a registration office or any place agreed with the registrar. The marriage can be carried out by a registrar or an assistant registrar who has been approved by the Registrar General.
- A religious or belief marriage, may be solemnised only by a religious or belief celebrant approved to do so under Marriage (Scotland) Act 1977.
By law both parties to a proposed civil, religious or belief marriage are required to submit marriage notice forms to the registrar of the district in which the marriage is to take place informing them of their intention to marry.
