Larbert High golfers secure school’s best-ever finish at international championship
Four Larbert High School pupils achieved the school’s best result yet at the World Schools Golf Championships, finishing second overall against young golfers from 22 other schools.
Adam Love, S5, Zac Love, S3, Luke Pringle, S3, and Ruari McNeil, S4, represented the school from 14 to 16 September at Ladybank Golf Club in Fife and two courses at Fairmont St Andrews. The three-day championship involved 23 schools from 17 countries.
Larbert High was the only school from the Falkirk Council area taking part and one of three Scottish schools to have competed in each championship since the event began in 2024.
Schools taking part this year included teams from the USA, Nigeria, the Cayman Islands and the United Arab Emirates.
There was also individual success for Larbert High School teacher Greg Halkett, who finished first in the male teachers' competition.
Larbert pupils also took second and third places in the senior Stableford competition, helping the school finish second overall.
Jo Wilson, Rector at Larbert High School, said:
Adam, Zac, Luke and Ruari represented Larbert High at an international event and returned with an excellent set of results.
They supported each other, showed respect to other competitors and made the most of meeting young people from different countries. Finishing second against schools from 17 countries reflects just how well they performed as a team.
Larbert High teacher Greg Halkett supported the pupils throughout the championship.
He said:
When Zac and I finished our round on the final day, the other Larbert players and parents were waiting around the last green. They had finished their own rounds but came back to support their teammates. That summed up the team bond across the three days.
I’d also like to thank the parents who helped with travel and supported all four pupils.
Ruari McNeil said:
It was a good experience meeting people from around the world and playing challenging courses, particularly in the conditions on the second day.
I was pleased with how I played and proud to represent Larbert High.
The school is planning its own golf championship in May and June 2027, giving more pupils the opportunity to play competitive golf at a local course.
