If you have a child with a disability, we may be able to offer you help at home, access to specialist equipment and short breaks away from home for your child.

We will need to asses your needs to find out how we can help.

Depending on the assessment, you may be able to use the following services:

  • Help at home, including providing specialist equipment your child may need
  • Short breaks away from home for your child
  • Access to an activity scheme that provides social and recreational opportunities during school holidays
  • Youth clubs and befriending throughout the year

We can also help you apply for benefits you may be able to get.

How to apply

Please contact your local Social Work office and ask for us to carry out an assessment.

If you are unable to call, someone can do this for you, such as:

  • Relatives or carers
  • Health professionals, such as your community nurse or GP
  • Voluntary organisations

Mi_Remote is a simple iPad control system which allows children and young people with physical disabilities and / or additional learning needs to influence their environment. This specially-designed app has won an international Media and Entertainment Global Elevate Award for accessible innovation.

The Children with Disabilities team developed the app in collaboration with Therapy Box, an inclusive technology software developer. A simple, resizable grid layout allows children and young people to manage their entertainment sources – either the TV, music, interactive stories, infra-red toys – or all at once. Also included in the app is a fantastic story feature which allows the creation of interactive stories and an action button which allows you to combine this with your remote control toy from your iPad.

Mi_Remote enables young users to affect their environment independently and learn how to do things that normally other people do on their behalf. The tablet-based system can be personalised to be touch based or respond to auditory recognition.

The team suggest it may also be useful to support some adults with disabilities to switch on the TV or choose a TV station.

The Mi_Remote app costs £24.99 and you can get it from iTunes.

The additional infrared iTach Flex hardware costs approx £110 and you can get it from Therapy Box, Amazon, Global Cache and other suppliers.

The app may be developed for Android in the future.
