Are you renting from Falkirk Council or a Registered Social Landlord (RSL)?

If you are already on maximum Housing Benefit (HB) but need to pay the Size Criteria - Under Occupancy charge (sometimes referred to as Bedroom Tax), you can claim DHP to pay the shortfall. Just tick a couple of boxes on our short claim form, sign it and get it back to us.

If you are not on maximum Housing Benefit and have a further shortfall to pay as well as the Size Criteria – Under Occupancy, you will need to complete a full application form including a list of all your income and expenditure so that we can assess whether or not you are in need of further financial assistance. As the funding is limited, we can only pay these shortfalls in exceptional circumstances.

Are you renting from a Private Landlord?

Housing Benefit (Local Housing Allowance) (LH) already takes account of the number of bedrooms allowed within the calculation.

We cannot award DHP to cover any ineligible service charges, for example fuel, heating, meals or insurance which may be included within the rent you are charged.

So that we can assess whether or not you are in need of further financial assistance from DHP, you need to complete a full application form, including a list of all your income and expenditure. We can only pay these shortfalls in exceptional circumstances.

What is the budget?

The DHP budget is set each financial year (01 April to 31 March). Once the money has been spent, we can't make any more DHP payments that year.

Next steps

We will write to you to tell you our decision. If your application has been approved, the letter will tell you the amount and the length of the award. If it is refused, we will tell you the reasons why.

DHP is not a Housing Benefit payment and is not subject to the statutory appeals process. If you are unhappy with our decision, you can ask us to look at our decision again. We will review your case and, if appropriate, will refer it to a panel made up of members of all our services. We will write to you to tell you what the decision is. The panel's decision is final.
