Councillors will consider proposals to fully fund new community sports facilities in Bo'ness and Denny through Falkirk Council's capital programme.

The proposals will be considered on 26 March 2026 as part of Falkirk Council's proposed £276.6m General Fund Capital Programme for 2026/27 to 2030/31, which sets out planned investment in schools, infrastructure and public assets across the area.

Investment in Boโ€™ness and Denny

Plans to develop new facilities in Bo'ness, Denny and the Braes were previously agreed as part of the Council's wider programme to improve sport and leisure provision across the area. The programme was originally supported by a £10.5m capital allocation.

As design development, site investigations and procurement activity have progressed, updated cost estimates have been prepared by external consultants. These estimates reflect wider pressures across the construction sector, including inflation and site-specific requirements.

Updated projections indicate that the Bo'ness Community Sports Wing at Bo'ness Academy is expected to cost around £7m, while the proposed Denny Town Centre sports facility is forecast at £7.5m.

In March 2026, Falkirk Council approved revenue funding to support borrowing of £15.5m that would enable both projects to move forward, with £5m coming from the 2.5% Council Tax increase ringfence to support delivery of the Denny facility.

Remaining funding within the programme will support related costs such as equipment, fit-out and improvements to surrounding public space.

Subject to approval, construction of both the Bo'ness and Denny facilities is expected to begin in 2027, with completion anticipated in 2028.

Future plans for Braes

Work will also continue to explore options for a future facility in the Braes, with £100,000 already approved through the revenue budget to progress feasibility work, alongside in-principle allocation of £6.6m linked to future funding decisions.

Malcolm Bennie, Director of Place Services, said:

The new sports facilities in Bo'ness and Denny would provide exciting modern spaces for leisure, fitness and community activity. The Denny facility would also support wider regeneration of the town centre where a site has been vacant for some years. The proposals are backed up by consultation with local residents who want to see this investment.

"It is now for councillors to consider the funding proposal required to allow both projects to move forward as part of the wider Capital programme.
