Falkirk Council is asking residents and stakeholders for their views on the future of maintenance in some private housing estates where it is not the legal landowner.

The local authority currently carries out ground maintenance in some privately owned areas, including grass cutting, hedge and shrub work, and weed control.

The land remains in private ownership but has historically been maintained by the Council at no cost. This type of arrangement is not replicated in most other parts of Falkirk.

Continuing to provide this service in privately owned areas may mean other parts of the grounds maintenance and street cleaning service need to be reduced, given the Council’s current financial position.

Douglas Gardiner, Head of Environment and Operations, said:

These arrangements have been in place for a long time, and any changes need to be considered carefully.

“This consultation gives residents the opportunity to say what works well, what doesn’t, and to help develop a clear and consistent approach to managing land across Falkirk.

The consultation runs on Participate+ until 18 January 2026. Feedback received will help inform any future decisions about how these privately owned areas are maintained.
