Councillors are to consider proposals to improve the management and care of Falkirk Council’s museum collections.

If agreed, the works will inform the future plans for a replacement museum store that could make the collection more accessible to the public.

Elected members will consider the plans at a meeting of the Executive on 1 May and if approved, the Council will form a new Review Panel to help organise and simplify the collections held in storage.

Each of the approximately 36,000 museum items in the inventory will be carefully assessed with the adoption of an industry-standard ‘rationalisation’ process, to meet Museum and Galleries Scotland assurance requirements.

Rationalisation will involve reviewing the collection to identify and responsibly remove duplicate, damaged, or less relevant items to retain objects that hold the greatest value for the community, education, and future research.

The proposed Review Panel will oversee this process for the next two years. The panel will include museum experts and council staff who will check each item with care.

The Council would then consider new locations to safely store objects to replace the current facility in Grangemouth to better suit conservation requirements and ensure the space meets long-term needs.

Falkirk’s museum collection contains a wide range of historically significant artefacts - from ancient tools, jewellery and coins to historic clothing and one of the earliest televisions ever produced.

Malcolm Bennie, Director of Place Services said:

This process will be an important step in ensuring Falkirk’s museum collections are well cared for and accessible for future generations.

“By reviewing and streamlining the collection, we can make the best use of storage space and focus on preserving items which truly matter to our community and heritage. It is now up to elected members to decide if this is the best way forward for Falkirk Council’s collection.
