Road network improvements delivered in 2024/25 following additional investment
Nearly 50 kilometres of local roads were resurfaced last year thanks to a £7.5 million capital investment in the area’s road network. This included an additional £4 million allocated specifically to accelerate resurfacing and maintenance works across the local network.
The investment enabled Falkirk Council’s Roads Service to target the areas in greatest need and deliver longer-term improvements.
Over the 12-month period, the service delivered almost 50 kilometres of planned resurfacing - a major increase on previous years - with works targeted at locations in most need of permanent repair improving road conditions and delivering more resilient surfaces to reduce future maintenance needs.
This included substantial upgrades at key sites such as:
- Lathallan Interchange (£256,000)
- Main Street, Polmont (£147,000)
- Powdrake & Inchyra Roundabouts, Grangemouth (£138,000)
- Bothkenner Road, Carronshore (£80,691)
- Westburn Avenue, Falkirk (118,204)
- Upper Candie, near Standburn (£139,193)
The additional funding also supported focused efforts to address road defects. By directing more resource to repairs, the service saw the number of reported potholes drop significantly from 900 to 57 over the year - helping to improve driving conditions and reduce repeat faults.
Drainage was another key area of improvement. The service carried out over 35,000 gully cleanses, representing 98% of the total gully network. This was a 272% increase on the previous year’s total number of cleanses (9,660) and will contribute to better road drainage and fewer weather-related issues on the network.
Councillor Paul Garner, Depute Leader of Falkirk Council, said:
The additional funding has allowed us to significantly ramp up our roads capital programme to make real improvements across our road network.
“These works have already delivered tangible benefits for road users, improving safety and travel conditions across the area.
“By targeting resurfacing, pothole repair and drainage at the same time, we’ve taken a joined-up approach to how we maintain our roads. The results speak for themselves and we’re continue this work in the year ahead.
In the 2025/26 budget, Falkirk Council has again allocated the same level of additional funding to the Roads Service. This continued investment will enable further resurfacing and repair schemes to be rolled out across the area. So far, completed works include:
- B816 Seabegs Road £121K
- Inchyra Road £80K
- A9 Stirling Road £75K
- New Hallglen Road £63K
- B825 Slamannan Road £48K
The next phase of programmed works will include Nethermains Road, Denny, A904 Bridgeness Road, Bo’ness, Ochiltree Terrace, Camelon and School Road, Redding all building on the progress made in 2024/25 to improve the condition, safety and resilience of the area’s roads.
