📆 Timeline

This timeline outlines the key milestones in the investigation, repair and reinstatement of Maddiston Primary School following the discovery of structural defects in the original building.

Winter 2023/24

Storm damage led to inspections of the school building. During these checks, previously hidden structural issues were discovered.

2024

Engineers carried out detailed surveys and testing to understand the extent of the problems. Investigations confirmed significant defects in parts of the original school building.

June 2025

The Council confirmed that only areas assessed as safe would remain in use. Plans were developed to accommodate pupils across several school sites.

August 2025

Temporary learning arrangements were introduced across multiple school locations. The school was expected to remain partially closed until at least August 2026.

October 2025

Investigations confirmed that the school could be repaired rather than demolished. A £14 million refurbishment project was announced and the reopening date was revised to August 2027.

November 2025

A report to Special Council confirmed the preferred repair option, project costs and programme timetable. Work continued on developing the reinstatement project.

January 2026

Contractors started work on site and began preparatory and strip-out activities. This marked the start of the physical refurbishment programme.

February 2026

New pupil arrangements for August 2026 were confirmed, allowing more classes to return to the Maddiston campus. Additional modular accommodation was planned at Maddiston and Braes High School.

May 2026

An independent Root Cause Analysis found that defects in the original construction of the school caused the issues. The review found no evidence that maintenance or day-to-day operation of the school contributed to the problems.

August 2026

Further investigations uncovered additional defects and compliance issues. The reopening date was revised from August 2027 to August 2028.

August 2028

Maddiston Primary School is expected to fully reopen.

The completed project will provide a safe, compliant and modern learning environment for pupils and staff.
