Earlsgate Roundabout traffic signal upgrades to begin
Work to upgrade the traffic lights and install new pedestrian and cycle crossings at Earlsgate Roundabout will begin on Monday 26 October 2026, marking another major milestone in the A9/A904 Westfield Improvement Project.
The work, which is expected to take around three weeks, will see the existing traffic signal system upgraded to improve its reliability and efficiency.
New signal-controlled crossings will also be installed on the roundabout next to the A904 Falkirk Road and A905 Glensburgh Road, providing safer routes for pedestrians and cyclists without having to cross busy access roads near McDonald's, the petrol station and the M9 slip road.
What drivers need to know
During the works, the traffic lights at Earlsgate Roundabout will be switched off.
The junction will operate as a conventional roundabout, with drivers approaching the roundabout required to give way to traffic from their right.
The lights must remain switched off throughout the upgrade to allow the existing and new systems to be connected safely.
The upgraded signals and new crossings are expected to become operational around Monday 16 November 2026, subject to progress.
Drivers are asked to take extra care when approaching and travelling through the roundabout.
A major step towards completion
The Earlsgate upgrade is the first in a series of permanent traffic signal installations as the A9/A904 Westfield Improvement Project moves towards completion in early 2027. Further work will include new controlled crossings on the A904 and traffic signals at Westfield Roundabout.
The project aims to ease congestion, improve traffic flow, and enhance safety and accessibility for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists. It will unlock the Falkirk Gateway Sites for development, encouraging economic growth and investment. The improvements will also create better connections between Falkirk and Grangemouth.
Delivered by Balfour Beatty on behalf of Falkirk Council, the project is the largest infrastructure investment under the Council's Tax Incremental Finance (TIF) programme, with additional funding of £14.1 million from the UK Government.
