Overnight road closures and change at Alexander Avenue
Drivers using the A9 and A904 near Westfield Roundabout should plan ahead for traffic changes taking place in early March as improvement work continues.
These include overnight road closures to allow traffic to move onto newly constructed sections of carriageway, and a temporary closure of the Alexander Avenue/A904 Junction.
🌙 Overnight closures and traffic switch – A9/A904 (2 to 4 March)
The A9 between Stadium Roundabout and Westfield Roundabout, and the A904 between Westfield Roundabout and Forth Valley College, will close overnight from 8pm to 6am, on Monday 2, Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 March.
Diversion routes:
- Stadium Roundabout to Westfield Roundabout closure: A9 Laurieston Link Road – A9 Laurieston Bypass – Cadgers Brae Roundabout – Beancross Road – Earlsgate Roundabout – A904 Falkirk Road (and vice versa)
- Westfield Roundabout to Forth Valley College closure: A9 – Etna Road – Thornhill Road – A904 Grangemouth Road (and vice versa)
With the new eastbound A904 and northbound A9 sections now substantially complete, these overnight closures will allow temporary traffic management to be installed. This will allow traffic to switch onto the new carriageway so work can begin on the opposite side.
⛔ Alexander Avenue/A904 Junction – temporary closure
From Monday 2 March, the Alexander Avenue/A904 Junction will close to allow resurfacing and junction improvement work to take place. The junction is expected to reopen by mid-April.
During this period:
- Drivers will not be able to enter or exit Alexander Avenue at the junction with the A904
- The main diversion route will be via Randyford Street
- Vehicles will be able to travel eastbound on the new link road by the Fire Station
- Pedestrian diversion routes remain unchanged during this phase – you can view the routes on the project website
When the junction reopens, it will operate as left in / left out only. This is a permanent change, as a central reservation on the newly constructed dual carriageway will prevent vehicles from turning right across the A904.
Why this work is taking place
The A9/A904 Improvement Project is one of the largest infrastructure schemes delivered through Falkirk Council’s TIF programme. It includes new carriageway layouts, roundabouts – including the Gateway roundabout above - and upgraded routes for pedestrians and cyclists.
Once complete, the project will support safer travel, improve traffic flow and unlock development opportunities around the Helix, Falkirk Stadium and Forth Valley College.
